One inventory, multiple disclosures: why your corporate and product footprints should share a backbone

Corporate inventories and product footprints are usually built twice. Here is why building them once, and viewing them many ways, saves time and avoids conflicting numbers.

Most organizations build their corporate GHG inventory and their product carbon footprints as two separate projects, often in two separate spreadsheets. The result is twice the data collection and, too often, two sets of numbers that do not agree.

The same data, seen through different lenses

A tonne of natural gas burned at your plant is the same tonne whether it appears in your Scope 1 total, in the cradle-to-gate footprint of the product made there, or in the baseline of your decarbonization target. What changes is the perspective: the boundary, the method, the allocation rule or the disclosure framework.

ClimateTab is built around that idea. You build one inventory, then switch between operational control, financial control and equity share, between location-based and market-based Scope 2, or between corporate and product views, without rebuilding anything.

Why it matters for reporting

  • Your ESG report, your product footprints and your targets all start from the same numbers.
  • Verifiers follow one audit trail instead of several.
  • New frameworks become a new view of existing data, not a new data collection exercise.
