Gate-to-gate to cradle-to-cradle: choosing a product boundary

The boundary you pick decides what your product footprint means. A short guide to the four options.

A product carbon footprint is only meaningful once you know its boundary. ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard both ask you to define it up front.

  • Gate-to-gate: only the processes inside your own facility.
  • Cradle-to-gate: everything from raw-material extraction until the product leaves your gate. This is the most common boundary for business-to-business products and for CBAM.
  • Cradle-to-grave: adds distribution, use and end of life.
  • Cradle-to-cradle: treats end of life as the start of a new cycle through recycling or reuse.

ClimateTab supports all four, with multi-product allocation and the option to exclude unit processes where a standard or customer requires it.
